Oven and range repair
Gas and electric ranges, wall ovens and cooktops. An oven that won’t heat or a burner that won’t light is usually one part, tested and replaced in one visit.
What usually goes wrong
In a gas oven, the igniter is the part that wears out most. It has to glow hot enough to open the safety valve, and an aging igniter glows but never quite gets there: you hear the oven click, smell a little gas, and nothing lights. On an electric oven, the bake and broil elements fail visibly, often with a blister or a break you can see.
Uneven baking and temperatures that drift usually trace back to the temperature sensor, a convection fan, or simply the oven calibration. Cooktops have their own list: spark modules that click nonstop, burners that light only on high, and radiant elements under glass that stay dark.
Oven & range problems and causes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What the technician does |
|---|---|---|
| Gas oven won’t heat | Weak igniter, faulty safety valve | Measure igniter current, replace the igniter or valve |
| Electric oven won’t heat | Burned-out bake or broil element, relay on the control board | Test elements and the control output |
| Burns or underbakes | Faulty temperature sensor, convection fan, calibration | Test the sensor and recalibrate the oven |
| Burner won’t light | Clogged burner port, wet or cracked spark electrode | Clean the burner and test the spark circuit |
| Clicking that won’t stop | Moisture in the switch, failed spark switch or module | Dry and test the switches, replace the faulty one |
| Element stays dark | Burned element, infinite switch, loose wiring | Test the element and the switch |
Try this first
- Make sure the oven is not in a lockout or Sabbath mode and that the clock is set.
- Remove the burner caps and dry them completely after a spill.
- For electric ranges, check both halves of the double breaker.
- If you smell gas, do not try any switches. Leave the house and call the gas utility from outside.
Keep it running
- Avoid the self-clean cycle right before a holiday; it is hard on fuses and control boards.
- Wipe spills on glass cooktops while they are fresh, with a cooktop cleaner rather than an abrasive.
- Keep foil off the oven floor; it blocks airflow and can damage the finish.
Questions
- Do you repair induction cooktops?
- Yes, most brands. Induction faults are often in the power or control boards, so the model number helps a lot before the visit.
- Can you convert a range from natural gas to propane?
- Yes, when the manufacturer offers a conversion kit for that model.
